Hausritterorden vom Heiligen Hubertus: Ordenskleinod mit Juwelenbesatz.
A truly magnificent large jewelled badge of the order, completely set with cut rock crystals and green glass stones. Dating from 2nd half of 19th century.
The mounting silver, the center medallion gold and enamels. The reverse gold plated. The stones set in à jour workmanship. Extremely elaborate in goldsmithing terms, hand-sawn as was customary in the 19th century. The reverse pin is missing.
This badge is stylistically very similar to an example in the Residenz Museum in Munich, which was made in Mannheim in 1708 and re-set in 1761.
Our jewel was probably commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845-1886) from his Munich court jeweler Gottfried Merk and used by the monarch as part of his magnificent personal ceremonial.
Although it is designed as a very large collar badge it was probably provided with a pin device on the back in addition to the eyelet because of its heavy weight.
This badge came by inheritance into private property and from there into a large German collection from which it was sold some years ago to the present owner.
One of the most important and most splendid order jewels of the St. Hubertus - Order, which was offered so far on the collector's market.
Our piece is illustrated and described like its historical model in the Munich Residence inthe reference work by Karsten Klingbeil / Andreas Thies: Orden 1700 - 2000, Kirchheim unter Teck 2008, p. 76/78, No. 192 and 193.
