SS - Ziefernrohrkarabiner 98 der Firma Mauser Oberndorf a.N. (Code byf) mit Brünner Montage (Einhakmontage) im Kaliber 8 x 57mm IS und dow ZF 4 fach. S.Nr. 16277.
The matching numbers (except for the breech) carbine 98 k by Mauser Oberndorf a.N. is equipped with the Brünn double claw mount and a dow glass (matching number) with centre ring adjustment. ´
The barrel of the carbine bears the proof mark Adler HK (eagle w. swastica) on the left side. Otherwise no other marks are visible. On the left side of the barrel is the acceptance stamp of the SS Zentralzeugamt 2, "Adler HK über SSZZA2", as well as the proof mark Adler HK (eagle w. swastica) and the Serial Number 16277d. The model designation "Mod. 98" follows.
On the top of the case the following details are visible in front of the mounting: military acceptance stylised eagle over 135 and the code byf for Mauser - Werke Oberndorf a.N.. The double claw sniper rifle mount is without acceptance and serial number.
The upper ring is of the milled version without recess with the four-digit serial number. The lower ring, magazine box and magazine box cover also correspond to the milled contemporary versions and are marked with the four- or five-digit serial number respectively. The rear sight with one-sided scaling and slide is marked on the underside with a two- or four-digit serial number.
The breechblock in the gun, with non matching serial numbers, is made by Sauer & Sohn (code ce) and is in itself matching except for the firing pin and bears the s.nr. 3084 d. On the butt plate there is the S.No. 3084 d, the military proof mark, eagle HK, as well as two military proof marks of stylised eagles above 37, which were assigned to Sauer & Sohn.
All breech parts bear a serial number and the lock and the firing pin nut have two additional military acceptance marks of Sauer & Sohn.
The laminated stock is in almost unused condition with clear military acceptance marks on the bottom of the butt as well as on the right side of the butt. The acceptance mark on the right side of the butt, eagle HK above the WaA mark, can no longer be identified in the sequence of numbers. This also applies to the military acceptance mark on the underside of the butt, which consists only of a stylised eagle and the WaA identification number.
The laminated wood stock has a wide butt plate, a milled ram plate and a milled trunnion bearing. The scope mounting parts have no markings. The scope with scaled focus on the rear sight and height adjustment on the centre tube is signed as follows;
Left side of the scope with matching serial number of the weapon corresponding to 16277 D
and on the upper side with "dow +".
Both the rifle and the scope with the mount have been been re-blued. The numerals etc. were covered with white paint.
An extremely rare all original sniper rifle which was manufactured for the SS with the mounting of the scope beeing assembled by the SS Zentralzeugamt.
