314 French Dragoon Helmet, probably of the Condé Legion, late 18th century.

The helmet brass with attached hand-chased comb, chiselled feathers on the side. Medusa head on the front. Ring worked into the top of helmet. Lower part with original trimming of leopard skin. At the sides cockades and sleeve for inserting the bush. Long horsehair tail on the back.  Comb riveted on the inside. With wide original brown leather sweatband and brown linen lining.

Accompanied by a portrait miniature of a dragoon officer wearing a similar helmet in a somewhat later version with a leather front peak. In a contemporary brass frame with hinged opening mechanism on the back. 1
