Charles Albrecht of Bavaria (* 6 August 1697 in Brussels; † 20 January 1745 in Munich) of the House of Wittelsbach was Elector and Duke of Bavaria as Charles I from 1726 to 1745. After the death of the Habsburg Emperor Charles VI in 1740, he also claimed the Archduchy of Austria on the basis of his marriage to Maria Amalia of Austria, Charles VI's niece, and was briefly King of Bohemia from 1741 to 1743 as Charles III, but was unable to prevail against Maria Theresa in the War of the Austrian Succession, which even cost him his rule in Bavaria for a time. When he seemed to be victorious in the meantime, he gained election as Holy Roman Emperor in 1742 as Charles VII and remained so until his death.
