German Orders and MedalsKingdom of Prussia

10 Kingdom of Prussia: Order of the Red Eagle - Grand Cross set with Crown and Oakleaves.

The sash badge gold and enamel, without sash. On the lower arm of the cross the maker's mark "S.F.S." of the court jewelers Friedeberg & Söhne, Berlin.

The crown in finest hollow embossing, the medallions and the oak leaves particularly finely chased. The enamel background of the eagle in fine guilloché.

Excellent preserved magnificent badge in the best Berlin jeweler quality.

The breast star silver - gilded, the center enameled. The oak leaves separately applied in gold. Reverse fitted with pin for wearing. On the back screw medallion. Below the pin's catch incised mark "W" of the court jewelers Wagner & Sohn, Berlin.

Both pieces together in the original red leather case of issue, the lid with gold embossed Prussian royal crown (only for the awards of the RAO with crown). Inside black velvet inlay, respectively white silk lining.

The crown to the Grand Cross of the Order of the Red Eagle was a very exclusive and rarely awarded decoration. It was mostly awarded to the princes of the Prussian royal house, or the Hohenzollern dynasty as well as to the high generals and admirals. For a list of the bestowed see Dr. P. Sauerwald: Die Königliche Krone zum Roten-Adler-Orden, part II, in BDOS (ed.): Orden und Ehrenzeichen, BDOS Jahrbuch 2000, p. 62 ff. With 92 awards in all combinations, only about half of them with oak leaves, one of the rarest Prussian Grand Crosses.

Truely magnificent, splendid set.
