Das
Tragen juwelenbesetzter Ordensinsignien war im gesamten 18. Jahrhundert
gebräuchlich und ist auf zahlreichen zeitgenössischen Porträts von
Rittern vieler unterschiedlicher europäischer Orden dokumentiert.
Besonders
auf der Iberischen Halbinsel in Spanien und Portugal wurden die
Kleinodien der traditionsreichen mittelalterlichen Ritterorden in
prächtiger Ausführung getragen.
Dabei war die Kostbarkeit der Ausgestaltung dem Geschmack und den Möglichkeiten der jeweiligen Ordensritter überlassen.
Besonders
Insignienn des portugiesischen Christus Ordens haben sich in
unterschiedlichsten Ausführungen bis heute erhalten, wohingegen
Dekorationen des Aviz - Ordens und des Ordens St. Jacobs vom Schwert nur
in verhältnismäßig geringer Anzahl die Zeiten überdauert haben.

and is documented in numerous contemporary portraits of knights of many
different European orders. On the Iberian Peninsula in
Spain and Portugal, the magnificent jewels of the traditional medieval
orders of chivalry were worn. The elaborate nature of the design was
left to the taste and desires of the respective Knights.
The
decoration of the Portuguese order of Christ has been preserved to this
day in a wide variety of designs, whereas decorations of the Aviz order
and the order of St. Jacobs of the Sword have survived only in
relatively small numbers.
