German Orders and MedalsDuchy of Nassau

5 Nassau: Silver Civil Merit Medal with older portrait of Duke Adolph of Nassau (1865-1866).

Silver, on the original ribbon. On the obverse the older portrait of the Duke. On the neck section marked""KORN". The reverse within a laurel - oak wreath with the inscription: "ADOLPH HERZOG ZU NASSAU".

In 1864 a new die was cut to the obverse of the medal by mintmaster Korn in Wiesbaden (1859-1866).

Of these, 25 medals were minted in silver in February 1865. Only 12 of these pieces were awarded. The remaining 13 medals were melted down in March 1867.

Beautiful example of this extremely rare medal with very nice old patina.
