The French Consulate refers to a period in the history of the First French Republic. From 10 November 1799 to 1 December 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte ruled as First Consul (Consulate of the 18th Brumaire An VIII consisting of: Napoleon Bonaparte, Emmanuel-Joseph Sieyès and Pierre-Roger Ducos).

The Consulate was replaced by the Premier Empire with the coronation of Napoleon I. as Emperor on 2 December 1804.

The transition from the Directory to the Consulate was brought about by the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire VIII (9 November 1799). The Constitution of 1795 was abolished by the Council of Ancients under pressure from the military.

The other consuls in the 2nd Consulate (of 24 Frimaire An VIII), besides Napoleon Bonaparte, were Jean-Jacques Régis de Cambacérès and Charles-François Lebrun.

Charles-François Lebrun (* 19 March 1739 in Saint-Sauveur-Lendelin near Coutances (Manche department); † 16 June 1824 in Sainte-Mesme near Dourdan (Yvelines department)) was a French statesman. He became Third Consul after Napoleon's coup d'état in 1799 and Arch-Treasurer of the Empire after Napoleon's elevation to Emperor in 1804, as well as Duke of Piacenza in 1808. He also served as Governor General of the Ligurian Republic in 1805-06 and of Holland, united with France, in 1810-13.
