When the Soviet submarine S-13 sank the Wilhelm Gustloff off the coast of Pomerania on 30 January 1945, packed with civilians fleeing from the Red Army, between 4,000 and more than 9,000 people lost their lives. In terms of a single ship, her sinking is considered one of the most loss-making maritime disasters in human history and one of the greatest war crimes committed by the Soviets in World War II.

Only a few mementos of this ship, purchased as souvenirs on voyages before 1945, have survived.
