53 Veteran's Badge for 24 Years of Service (Ordre des Deux Epées)

Badge from the period of the French Revolution, the crossed swords underlaid with ribbon in the colours of the tricolour. With suspension ring as worn by officers. Lacquer cover on the back damaged.

The Order of the Two Swords was the only decoration of the Ancien Regime that was adopted by the French Republic after the abolition of the Decoration Militaire (former Order of St. Louis and Ordre de Mérite Militaire). During the "Directoire" period after November 1795 awards were discontinued.

Very beautiful and extremely rare badge of which only very few examples are known to have survived.

54 x 36 mm.
