146 France: Dragoon helmet from the period of the Ancien Régime, model 1779, resp. 1786.

 Brass helmet with a riveted, fire-gilt, fluted embossed crest, the front with a medusa head. The formerly attached horsehair tail is missing. Attached brown leather base with two fluted gilt brass rosettes on the right and left sides. A feather bush grommet set into the leather on the right side. The inner lining is missing. With remnants of brown leather sweatband.

Very beautiful dragoon helmet, original in all parts, of the type based on the Roman model introduced by Maurice de Saxe in 1743.

Despite the lack of preservation, an extraordinarily rare piece and only to be found in a few private collections.
