Depending on the financial possibilities and preferences of the donors, sabres with artistically designed hilts and high-quality blades were commissioned instead of the regulation model. For example, officers chose special motifs for luxury productions, e.g. St. George (patron saint of the cavalry), St. Barbara (patron saint of artillery), the imperial double-headed eagle or the royal Hungarian coat of arms.

The k.u.k. Dragoon Regiment "Duke of Lorraine" No. 7 is one of the most honourable of the Imperial and Royal Monarchy. Archduke Carl Franz Joseph of Austria (later Emperor Charles I of Austria, King of Hungary, Bohemia, etc.) was detached from Uhlan Regiment No. 2 to Dragoon Regiment No. 7 in 1909 to complete his officer training. He remained in this regiment until 1913, and it was in this uniform that Archduke Carl married Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma. Prince Zdenko von Lobkowitz, who also served in this regiment, was assigned to him as head of the chamber until his death in 1922. Every year the regiment holds a memorial mass for the Emperor during the spring parade at the beginning of April.
